SPICE
This work explores the dual meaning of the word 'Spice,' juxtaposing science fiction mythology with military reality. On one hand, the term references Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune. In the Hebrew translation of the book, 'The Spice' (or Hamarkoch) is a mystical, psychedelic substance that extends life and unlocks human potential.
In our reality, however, SPICE is an acronym for Smart, Precise Impact, Cost-Effective. It refers to a guidance kit developed by the Israeli defense contractor Rafael, designed to convert unguided bombs into precision munitions with a lethal accuracy of three meters. This technology is currently exported to nations including the U.S., India, Greece, and Brazil.
The background imagery features two skulls in a state of interference. Unfolded into topographic contour lines, these skeletal forms merge to create abstract patterns reminiscent of the 'guilloche' security engravings found on war bonds. The work thus entwines the fictional resource of life with the real-world machinery of death, authenticated by the aesthetic of state finance.
